Mom, why can't I play catch in the street?
Because, I said so.
Dad, why can't i play with the gun?
Because I said so.
Teacher, he hit me why can't I hit him back?
Because, I said so.
Oh, I guess I understand. Because you said so. Why? Because you said so.
Mr. Officer, why can't I drive faster than the speed limit?
Because, I said so.
Mr. Governor, why can't we have more money for education?
Because I said so.
Mr. President, why must we go to war?
Because, I said so.
I guess I understand, it's because you said so. Why? Because, you said so.
What's that son? Why can't you play at Billy's today?
Because, I said so.
What daughter? Why can't you have a boyfriend?
Because, I said so.
What's that kids? Why do you have to go to school and play nice?
Because!!! I!!- I -I
Because I want you to get an education, and to expand your minds. I want you I develop a sense of wonder and a lust for learning! I want you to play well with others because I want you to cultivate healthy relationships with your peers, and I want you to find the joy of childhood friendships, but God forbid I reason with you like you're capable of it! It's just easier to say "because I said so."
And son. I don't want you to play at Billy's today because I just got back from a business trip and I want to teach you how to use a lawn mower, and how to throw a curve ball, and how to grill a steak. But mostly son, because I MISS you, and I want to spend time with you, but I'm too trapped behind my wall of stifled emotion to express or explain that to you! It's just easier to say "because I said so!"
And daughter. I don't want you to have a boyfriend because you're only 14. You're still my little girl. And when you're 14 it's virtually impossible I have an honest healthy relationship! And when you get your heart broken at 14 you're not mentally or emotionally capable of handling it! But most of all I'm afraid to see someone break my little girl's heart. but it's just easier to say "Because, I said so!"
What's that kids? Why didn't I just explain all this earlier?
Well- I guess- I guess because no one explained it to me. I guess I had to sort these feelings out for myself. I thought that you wouldn't understand. And it's taken me all this time, but I know you do understand. You see the only answer I ever got was "Because I said so." But I could've handled so much more than that, I DESERVED more than that. And kids, so do you. So don't be afraid to ask "why?" Don't be afraid to find a reason for every tick and tock. Think for yourselves and don't settle for the easy answer. That lazy answer. That sorry answer:
