CHEMICAL LEAK IN COUNTRY'S SOUTH EAST
Early this morning a gas tanker on a routine trip from Melbourne to Mount Gambier in the south east of South Australia was involved in a two-vehicle collision on the Princes Highway on the outskirts of Mount Gambier. The truck driver was unharmed, however the red stationwagon it hit was not so lucky. As the tanker rammed the back of the vehicle, travelling in front, the car was caused to spin out and run through a fence. All members of the family received injuries. Ambulance and Fire crews took almost four hours to free the family of four, while Emergency Service crews did their best to control the gas leaking from a puncture in the tank. The leak was reported to have spread over two square kilometers, some local residents having to be evacuated to the Blue Lake Sports Park. The family of four and the tanker driver are currently receiving treatment in the Mount Gambier hospital and are in a stable condition.
