Who out there ever wonders where things come from? Who made them? And why? I do. Every night when I look up at the stars, I hear the words of some favoured friends who told me things I could never learn anywhere else. These might seem like trivial bits of forget-me-nots, but to me they seemed vital pieces to life’s jigsaw puzzle; tit bits of wisdom which I shall cherish forever.
These simple words can change the life of a full-grown man, so imagine what impression they can leave on a young, inexperienced mind. Three words…seemingly so simple, yet possibly the hardest words in the English language to say, and mean at the same time. You can’t, and won’t say them unless you absolutely mean it, because they can either get you into trouble, or they can back you into a corner which is nearly impossible to get out of. Simple words, simple minds, complications beyond your wildest imaginations. Trouble at the next passing of wind from your alveoli, and dashing dreams flitting past semi-opened eyes; eyes pressured down from age beyond their years, wisdom and pain beyond their wildest dreams.
According to popular belief, English is the most spoken language in the world, after Chinese Mandarin. Who would name a language after a fruit? Or was the fruit named after the language? It’s the same story: who came first? The chicken or the egg? It is still the hardest, most complex language one could possibly speak. There is only one rule: and that is that there is an exception to every rule.
This thoughtless piece of writing came to me as I was sitting and pondering the mysteries of the earth…and why these simply words are still so hard to mean. So hard to say, so hard to believe.
These words? I love you.
