Religion is a huge part of everyday life. Fights, wars, disagreements; most stem from war. Which is generally started by religion. At this moment in time, I am studying the order of St John, which involves history from 1050-1300’s. The medieval period; the crusades; the Holy War. The time where castles ruled the world, God was the law and anyone who wasn’t a noble lived in poverty.
The time where good food was 3-month-old mutton and safe drinking water came from the washing basin. When peasants ate off carved wooden plates and drank from cupped, unwashed hands.
The time when debutantes never emerged, except for maybe their wedding or as they traveled to the nunnery at the local castle or church. To spend their life in black habits; clothing and otherwise. To resist life’s temptations and to deny love’s tendrilous grasp. To grow up a young woman and never know the feelings of maturity, childbirth, and be never put through the pain of heartbreak. Medieval castles required women to cook, clean and look after the place, but they were not to be seen out of their chambers or in attendance of men. Life as a women either living in a castle or living in the mire, was equally as tough. Being wife to the king required you to look beautiful all the time, including in your sleep and to keep quiet, so as you don’t conflict what the King says.
Your duty was to bear children- the firstborn being a son. Daughters were not favorably looked upon, unless they were beautiful, graceful, musical and could dance, and would reap a good dowry when married. Yes women were sold as wives and house slaves.
Slight change from today, isn’t it?
